About
TEXAS HAS A LOT OF UNIVERSITIES.
“Everything is bigger in Texas” – including the number of academic institutions
For an international company entering the U.S., that is both an advantage and a challenge.
Texas offers extraordinary depth in research, healthcare, engineering, entrepreneurship, biotechnology, workforce development and technology commercialization.
The harder question is:
Who do you call for what?
One university may be useful because of its researchers. Another may provide access to clinicians. Another may have an incubator, wet-lab space, technology-transfer office, specialized engineering capability or strong investor network.
Even community colleges can become important partners for workforce development, product demonstration and applied training.
The goal isn’t to identify the “best” university.
It’s to identify the right institution for what you are trying to accomplish.
WHY UNIVERSITIES MATTER
For companies entering the U.S., academic institutions can play several roles at once.
They may become:
Research collaborators.
Pilot or validation sites.
Clinical partners.
Design partners.
Technology licensors.
Talent pipelines.
Educational adopters.
Incubators.
Commercialization partners.
Connectors to investors and industry.
For international and early-stage companies that do not yet have a large U.S. customer base, those relationships can provide an important bridge between technology development and broader commercial adoption.
START HERE: THE UNIVERSITY OF TEXAS SYSTEM
One thing that frequently confuses companies from outside Texas:
The University of Texas is a system, not a single university.
The UT System stretches across Texas and includes major research universities and academic health institutions, including UT Austin, UT Dallas, UT Arlington, UT El Paso, UT Rio Grande Valley, UT San Antonio, UT Tyler, UT Southwestern, UTMB, UTHealth Houston and MD Anderson, among others. Stephen F. Austin is also now part of the UT System.
That means being told to “talk to UT” isn’t really enough.
The right UT institution depends on what you need.

UT AUSTIN
Innovation + Commercialization + Engineering + Health Tech
Best for: Technology commercialization, engineering, digital health, medtech, entrepreneurship, interdisciplinary research and startup development.
UT Austin combines a major research university with deep capabilities in engineering, computer science, business, natural sciences and Dell Medical School.
For a company entering the Texas ecosystem, it is particularly interesting when technology crosses traditional boundaries: engineering + medicine, AI + healthcare, devices + clinical need, or science + commercialization.
Think UT Austin when you need:
Research collaboration · Engineering expertise · Health innovation · Commercialization · Startup support · Interdisciplinary expertise

THE BIGGER LESSON
Texas doesn’t have one university ecosystem.
It has a network of academic ecosystems, each with different strengths, people, facilities and connections.
For an international company, the wrong question is:
“Which Texas university is best?”
The more useful question is:
“What do we need to accomplish — and which institution is built to help us accomplish it?”
Start there.
