Specialized Cohorts De-risking and Scaling Social Health and Academic Inventions

The VelocityTX Accelerator Programs are highly targeted, cohort-based initiatives designed to guide growth-stage healthcare and bioscience startups through the critical transition from validated product to active commercial scale. Administered by VelocityTX (a subsidiary of the Texas Research & Technology Foundation), these accelerators provide structured education, specialized mentoring, and pilot pathways to bridge the “valley of death” that often causes early-stage scientific startups to fail.

Key Specialized Accelerators

• Community Health Accelerator:
  • Strategic Partner: Developed in a multi-year partnership with Methodist Healthcare Ministries of South Texas (MHM).
  • Focus Area: Startups commercializing technologies that address the Social Determinants of Health (SDOH)—the non-medical, systemic factors impacting personal wellness (such as housing, transportation, maternal care access, and socioeconomic disparities).
  • Unique Benefit: Cohorts receive intensive training, culminating in a public Demo Day pitch event, alongside the exclusive opportunity to launch and run a live technology pilot directly within the massive Methodist Healthcare system.
• TechNovum™ Accelerator:
  • Strategic Partner: Run in collaboration with UT Health San Antonio (UTHSA).
  • Focus Area: Assisting investigator-entrepreneurs who wish to play an active, hands-on role in commercializing inventions and intellectual property developed within the UT Health system.
  • Methodology: Uses the industry-proven Wendy Kennedy Institute framework to help researchers validate market demand, map out business models, and perfect investor pitches.

Curriculum & Startup Support

Regardless of the cohort, participants are integrated into the modern VelocityTX Innovation Center on San Antonio’s East Side. The program curriculum is modeled after industry gold standards and includes:

• Structured market analysis and legal/regulatory compliance modules.
• One-on-one strategic coaching from active Entrepreneurs-in-Residence (EIRs).
• Intense pitch practice, capitalization strategy guidance, and warm introductions to active institutional and angel investor networks.
