The Ion District is a dynamic 16-acre, 12-block innovation corridor located in Midtown Houston. Developed as a joint initiative between Rice University (via the Rice Management Company) and the City of Houston, the district acts as a physical and economic conduit designed to anchor tech startups, global corporations, venture capitalists, and academic institutions within a single dense, walkable urban ecosystem.

Physical Infrastructure & Footprint

• The Ion Building: The crown jewel of the district is the Ion, a 266,000-square-foot facility transformed from a historic 1939 Sears showroom into a modernized steel-and-glass collaboration hub. It features extensive coworking spaces (operated by Common Desk), Class-A corporate offices, shared classrooms, and an indoor/outdoor communal plaza.
• Ion Prototyping Lab (IPL): Managed by TXRX Labs, this 6,500-square-foot advanced manufacturing facility provides hardware entrepreneurs and startups with direct access to 3D printers, laser cutters, lathes, CNC mills, and on-site engineering and technical training.
• The Arc at the Ion District: A landmark 196,400-square-foot expansion project built to add state-of-the-art, LEED Gold-certified laboratory ventilation and flexible R&D space tailored specifically to deep-science, energy, and AI endeavors.
• Greentown Labs Houston: Integrated directly into the district, this facility serves as the largest climate technology and sustainable energy startup incubator in North America.

Programs, Corporate Partnerships, & Events

• Enterprise Integration: The district acts as a corporate innovation base, housing dedicated technology ventures and engineering wings for major industry leaders, including Microsoft, Chevron Technology Ventures, Schlumberger, and Baker Botts.
• Public-Private Pipelines: Through high-level institutional alliances (such as its prominent Aerospace Innovation Hub partnership with NASA), the district regularly hosts federal tech-transfer pipelines, NASA tech talks, and open office hours to bridge the gap between startup founders and federal researchers.
• Community & Strategic Events: Supported by the Rice Alliance for Technology and Entrepreneurship, the space serves as a major civic forum. It utilizes its 250-seat central Forum Stairs and vast public plaza to host nearly a thousand public tech ecosystem mixers (e.g., Cup of Joey networking), angel investor bootcamps, and digital tech meetups annually.
