Health Informatics & Health IT (HIHIT)

The HIHIT program is a specialized workforce accelerator designed to bridge the gap between healthcare, data science, and modern business technology. Established in 2010 and boasting over 1,500 graduates, the program trains students and professionals to organize, analyze, and translate complex healthcare data into actionable clinical and business strategies.

Key Programs & Formats

• Live Online (Cohort-Based): A highly intensive, 9-week full-time certificate program. It is designed for UT Austin juniors/seniors, recent graduates, and career-pivoters who can dedicate 40+ hours per week to rapid skill acquisition.
• Self-Paced Online: A flexible, asynchronous non-certificate pathway. This allows working professionals or those looking to upskill in specific areas to learn at their own pace without an application process.

Technical & Practical Curriculum

The curriculum moves beyond theory to provide direct, hands-on experience with the technical infrastructure driving modern medicine:

• EHR & HIE Systems: Practical training utilizing real electronic health record software and functioning Health Information Exchanges (HIE).
• Data Analytics Tools: Building databases, data cleansing, and structuring data using industry-standard tools like SQL and Tableau to build predictive visual dashboards.
• Interoperability & Policy: Navigating cybersecurity, HIPAA compliance, healthcare finance (PPOs/HMOs), and workflow optimization.

Professional Outcomes

Graduates earn a professional certificate from the McCombs School of Business and qualify to sit for four external professional certifications in Health IT. The program also features a dedicated alumni networking association to assist graduates in transitioning directly into the workforce.
